It is said that Freud and Jung split over the question of parapsychology and occult phenomena. In reality the event was more complex. While Freud was passionate about psychic phenomena, he was committed to a the project of the singularity of the subject over tribe, religion, and group. In the end Jung would come to the same position – in fact saying that the emergent organizing field or archetype of the human psyche was in fact that of “individuation.” This same tension and ambivalence toward individuation not only played itself out in their relationship but continues to function in psychoanalytic process and history regarding the question of lineage, transmission, and Lacan’s “Nom du Pere.”
